On May 11, almost six thousand people gathered on Parliament Hill for the March for Life. They came from all over Canada to make a peaceful protest against legalized abortion and to promote a culture of life. A busload of people came from the Niagara Region to participate in the March. Most of them were high school students. The National March for life has been held in Ottawa for the past nine years, and The St. Catharines Right To Life has sent a bus for the past seven. This years March had the largest attendance from St. Catharines, and on Parliament Hill so far. The crowd on Parliament Hill was full of young, excited people. They marched through downtown Ottawa carrying signs and banners with pro-life messages. Sometimes they sang or cheered and sometimes prayed silently. When the crowd returned to the Hill, some women from Silent No More spoke. Silent No More is a group of women who have undergone abortions and have been hurt greatly by them. They tell the world their stories of forbidden grief to prevent more women from suffering so much. That night, Fr. Frank Pavone of Priests for Life USA spoke to nine hundred people at the Rose Dinner. He spoke of how the cause to protect the most fundamental right unites all believers in God better than anything else does. This is because the right to life transcends all mortal laws and nations . . . and remains as long as God reigns above in heaven. He said that this fight against disregard for human life is the greatest human rights struggle of all time. Abortion and euthanasia ignore the fact that there is only one who can made the choices for life and death. He is Jesus Christ. The pro-life movement is not only defending the right to life for defenseless unborn babies, but Gods right to give life. The Youth Conference on the next day was also very informative and enjoyable. Young students from across Canada attended this event, which was organized by Campaign Life Coalition. One of the Speakers, John Henry Weston, who founded Lifesite.net, said he found the march and conference very encouraging. He said that the media is always trying to paint pro-lifers as sexist old men, but the March for Life showed that the medias impression was totally wrong because most people at the March were young and female. I have gone to the March for Life for the last 4 years. Sometimes I feel like I am alone in the pro-life mission, and I become discouraged. But each year at the March the crowd of young activists searching for and bearing witness to the truth grows. Here are thousands of young people who, like me, see and care about the massacre of millions of innocent unborn babies. And I realize that Fr. Pavone may be right when he says, Our cause will prevail. The days of legalized abortion are numbered. |
